On June 13, Counselor Zhao Shangsen led young diplomats from the Embassy on a five-hour drive to conduct a field visit to Barajali Village, Niani District, Central River Region. Barajali Village is the birthplace of Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, founding president of the Republic of the Gambia. Hon. Sainey Jawara, member of the National Assembly of The Gambia and grandson of H.E. President Jawara, along with Hon. Omar Jobe, National Assembly Member for the Niani Constituency, accompanied the delegation.

Villagers welcomed the Chinese guests with songs and dances. The elders in the village recalled Jawara's childhood with deep affection, saying that the president's name, Kairaba, means "the bringer of peace and blessing", and the Chinese guests were in a way Kairaba of the village. Zhao Shangsen shared with villagers story of the wood-carving gift H.E. President Jawara presented to Chairman Mao in 1975 during his visit to China, saying that the gift is still on display in the museum in Beijing, which is testimonial to the fact that China stands ready to join hands with The Gambia in passing down our friendship through generations.

Zhao Shangsen also visited paddy fields in Barajali Village with Embassy diplomats, before heading for Kauur Village in Lower Saloum, constituency of NAM Sainey Jawara, and interacted with local villagers at the District Health facilities built with Chinese assistance in the 1980s.
