On June 9, the Chinese Embassy held a China-Gambia bantaba in the commemoration of the UN “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations” at Charles Jow Memorial Academy. Deputy Head of Mission Zhao Shangsen, UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Karl Frédérick Paul, Dean of the Confucius Institute at the UTG Xie Mingying, the Chairman of the school’s Board of Governors, and more than 200 people, including teachers and students, attended the event.

Guests gathered to watch the video addressed by Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the occasion of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. Zhao stated that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and The Gambia, as well as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges. China is ready to take this opportunity, in the spirit of Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s address, to work with The Gambia to deepen people-to-people exchanges and enhance mutual learning among civilizations. Mr. Paul emphasized that the essence of dialogue among civilizations lies in peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and sincere communication, a principle vividly exemplified by this event.

The Chinese and Gambian folklore and fine traditional cultures were showcased, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere.

In June 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution designating June 10 as the “International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.”
