On September 18, the signing ceremony of the China-Aid Greater Banjul Area (GBA) Electricity Improvement Project was held at the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines of The Gambia. Chinese Ambassador Liu Jin and Gambian Minister of Petroleum, Energy and Mines Nani Juwara attended the ceremony. The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) and TBEA signed the project contract.

Ambassador Liu said that the project is a concrete step to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, a major achievement of the deepening mutual trust between the two sides, and a reflection of the growing substance of the China-Gambia strategic partnership. As the two countries embark on a new decade of bilateral relations, the project comes at an opportune time and will contribute to the development of The Gambia’s electricity sector and bring greater benefits to the Gambian people.

Minister Juwara, on behalf of the Gambian government, expressed appreciation to the Chinese government and people for their support. He said that universal access to electricity is a national priority, noting that the project will help improve power distribution and benefit more than 80,000 residents.
